The Debate Club were invited to meet the Mayor, Councillor Eddie Humphreys, at the Town Hall yesterday.

The group had a Q&A session with the Mayor, who spent time talking to us about his role, the importance of local government and the importance of debating skills.

We were then able to take part in a debate in the council chambers where we discussed issues relating to young people in the area and sustainability.

The Mayor took us on a tour of the Town Hall and talked about how local government and law has changed over the years. Finally, we were given snacks in the Mayor’s parlour and he showed us the different robes worn by him and the history and significance of having a local Mayor.

This really was a great opportunity for the Debate Club to see where the skills they are learning here at school can take them in the future.
